Causes of Bleeding when Pregnant

A bloody clothA woman’s body experiences a lot of psychological and biological or bodily changes and unusual occurrences during pregnancy. One among them is bleeding when pregnant. About three out of ten women have bleeding when pregnant. But most of them will carry on with normal pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby too. But for some of them this bleeding may further lead to miscarriage. Bleeding usually occurs during the first three months of pregnancy.

Types of bleeding: Bleeding when pregnant phenomenon is different in different women. Some have the bleeding experience just once, some have vaginal spotting  on and off, some have streaks of blood, and some experience menses type of bleeding. Whatever the type, it is better to consult your doctor since bleeding when pregnant is an indication of threatened miscarriage in the first and second trimester and in the third trimester it is indicative of internal hemorrhage.  Especially women who have blood which is Rh negative like blood group O- or A- should immediately see the doctor.

Causes of bleeding: During the process of implantation of the zygote/embryo on the lining inside the uterus some amount of blood is ejected out through the vagina as vaginal spotting or vaginal streaking. For safety’s sake you have to inform your doctor. However this kind of spotting usually stops in a day or two. This specific bleeding when pregnant looks either like fresh blood or if it is mixed with the mucus it will be light pink in color.

Menstrual type bleeding
: Some women experience bleeding during the same time as their usual menstrual cycle. So this will coincide with first month, two months and three months into pregnancy. This bleeding when pregnant which is called breakthrough bleeding is also accompanied by the other menstrual symptoms such as back ache, cramps, pelvic heaviness, breast heaviness etc. The difference will be that the bleeding will not be as heavy as the normal bleeding. This bleeding takes place because of low production of hormones which not sufficient enough to stop bleeding. However by the end of the third month the placenta starts producing hormones in plenty and the bleeding stops. But in some unusual cases women have bleeding throughout their entire term under the constant supervision of their gynecologist and still have healthy babies. These are freaks of nature.

Generally bleeding when pregnant accompanied by other symptoms such as severe back ache, cramping of muscles, contracting sensation, sever fatigue etc are indicative of impending miscarriage. Some women also have the feeling of not being pregnant any more. This is mainly intuitive and most times right. The feeling of nausea, vomiting and breast tenderness also disappears. But these feelings can never be conclusive. So a medical opinion has to be sought. Others have bleeding but do not feel the loss of fetus and continue to have nausea and other symptoms of pregnancy. Both cases are normal and possible.  Doctor’s opinion and an ultra sound are advised in such cases for confirmation and reassurance.
